Reverse Engineer Apps — Privacy Policy and Legal
About these documents
Last updated: October 17, 2026.
This page holds all the legal documents for Reverse Engineer Apps: the Privacy Policy, Terms of use, Trial and license, Payments and refunds, and Support. Each heading below starts with the document it belongs to.
Privacy: About this policy
Last updated: October 17, 2026.
This policy covers Reverse Engineer Apps, made by G Thompson / Niagara Indie Apps: the desktop app for Windows, Linux and macOS, downloaded from niagaraindieapps.com. It does not cover our website itself, which has its own Privacy Policy at niagaraindieapps.com/privacy.
Privacy: The files you inspect stay on your computer
Reverse Engineer Apps reads the files you choose on your own computer to show their format, size, SHA-256 hash, header bytes, readable strings, byte entropy, and the analysis done by the REA engine and, if you choose, by Ghidra. It only reads those files. It never runs them.
It does not upload your files, their contents, or the results to Niagara Indie Apps or to anyone else. A report is saved only where you choose to save it, and only when you press Export.
While the REA engine or Ghidra analyzes a file, the engine may keep a private temporary working copy of it in your computer's temporary folder, readable only by you. It is deleted when the analysis finishes.
Privacy: No ads, analytics, or tracking
Reverse Engineer Apps contains no advertising, no analytics, and no crash-reporting service. We checked the app and the REA engine it includes for these, and there are none. We do not track you.
Privacy: Ghidra and Java (optional downloads)
The Ghidra analysis needs Ghidra and Java (a JDK), which are separate free programs and are not included in Reverse Engineer Apps. If they are not already on your computer, the app can download them, but only after you say yes:
• The Windows setup program checks your computer for them and asks before it installs the app. If you answer No, the installation is cancelled. The check only looks at folder names on your own computer and sends nothing anywhere.
• On Linux and macOS, the app asks once, the first time you open it. You can also start the download yourself later from the Ghidra analysis section.
When you agree, your computer downloads Ghidra from the official Ghidra releases on GitHub (github.com/NationalSecurityAgency/ghidra) and Java (Eclipse Temurin) from the official Adoptium releases on GitHub (github.com/adoptium/temurin21-binaries). As with any download, GitHub receives your IP address and the usual details of a web request, and its own privacy statement applies. We do not receive any of that, and nothing about your files is sent. The app unpacks a download only if it matches the checksum published for it.
They are installed for your user only, in `NiagaraIndieApps/reverse-engineer-apps/tools` inside your application-data folder. Ghidra and Java then run only on your computer, and only when you ask for a Ghidra analysis.
Privacy: What the app stores on your computer
• **Trial and device ID.** The time the app was first opened, and a random ID the app creates when it is first run. The main file (`licensing.json` in the app's data folder) is encrypted with your operating system's key store (Windows DPAPI, macOS Keychain, or Linux libsecret/KWallet) when one is available. A second, plain copy of the trial data is kept in a Niagara Indie Apps folder in your application-data folder, so that clearing one copy does not hand out a new trial. The random ID is not a hardware, advertising, or operating-system product ID.
• **License.** After you activate a license, your license key and the signed license token the server returns are stored the same way.
• **Choices.** The Ghidra folder you pick, and a note that the first-launch Ghidra and Java question has been asked.
• **Ghidra and Java**, if you let the app install them (see above).
None of this is sent to anyone except what is described under License activation.
Privacy: Free trial
Each device gets a free 72-hour trial. Nothing is sent to us during the trial, and the app does not contact our server unless you activate a license.
Privacy: License activation
The app contacts our license server at niagaraindieapps.com only when you activate a license, and later to re-check that license. When you activate, it sends:
• your license key
• this app's ID
• the random device ID described above
• the platform (Windows, Linux or macOS) and the app version
When the app later re-checks the license while you are online, it sends only your license key and that device ID.
Our server stores a one-way hash of the device ID, the platform, the app version, and when the device was activated and last checked. It also records the IP address of each license request in a license activity log.
We use this only to verify your license, enforce its limit of 2 devices, and prevent license abuse. If you never buy a license, the app never contacts our server.
Privacy: Links to our website
Some buttons in the app open niagaraindieapps.com in your web browser, for example to buy a license or get support. The app does not browse the web itself. Your browser and our website then handle that visit under the Privacy Policy at niagaraindieapps.com/privacy.
Privacy: Purchases
Licenses are bought on niagaraindieapps.com. The information you give at checkout (such as your email address) is covered by the site-wide Privacy Policy at niagaraindieapps.com/privacy. Card payments are processed by Stripe, and we never receive your full card number.
Privacy: Deleting your data
Uninstalling the app does not delete your data or the Ghidra and Java it installed for you. To remove everything the app stored, delete these folders after uninstalling:
• the app's data folder: `rea-desktop` inside your application-data folder (Windows `%APPDATA%`, macOS `~/Library/Application Support`, Linux `~/.config`)
• the Niagara Indie Apps folder: `NiagaraIndieApps/reverse-engineer-apps` inside the same place, which also holds the Ghidra and Java installed by the app
To free a device from your license, use niagaraindieapps.com/license/manage. To ask us to delete the license records we hold, contact us as described below.
Privacy: Open-source software
Reverse Engineer Apps is built on the open-source REA (Reverse Engineer Anything) project by morluto and its contributors, used under the MIT licence. Ghidra, from the U.S. National Security Agency, is open-source software under the Apache License 2.0 and Eclipse Temurin is open-source Java from the Eclipse Adoptium project. Neither is included in the app; they are separate programs you install. Full notices are in the app under Open source credits.
Privacy: Children
Reverse Engineer Apps is a technical tool for developers, security researchers, IT staff and students, and is not directed at children.
Privacy: Changes to this policy
If a future version of Reverse Engineer Apps changes how it handles data, we will update this page before that version is released.

Terms of use: About these terms
Last updated: October 17, 2026.
These terms cover Reverse Engineer Apps, made by G Thompson / Niagara Indie Apps, for Windows, Linux and macOS. Buying a license is also covered by the Refund Policy at niagaraindieapps.com/refunds and the site Terms at niagaraindieapps.com/terms. By installing or using the app you agree to these terms.
Terms of use: Your license
The app is free to download and install. Each device gets a free 3-day (72-hour) trial the first time the app is opened. After the trial the app locks until a license key is activated. A one-time unlock bought on niagaraindieapps.com gives you a permanent license for your own use, on up to 2 of your devices. The details are under "Trial and license".
Terms of use: What the app does, and what it does not
Reverse Engineer Apps reads the files you choose and shows what it finds: the file type, size, SHA-256 hash, header bytes, readable strings, byte entropy, and the results of the REA engine and, if you choose, Ghidra. It only reads files; it never runs them.
What it shows is information for you to weigh, not a verdict. A high entropy figure is not proof of malware, and a possibility the engine lists is not proof of anything.
Terms of use: Use it lawfully
Use the app only on files and software you have the right to examine. You are responsible for following the laws that apply to you and the license terms of the software you inspect, including any terms that limit examining or reverse engineering it.
Terms of use: Your license key
Keep your license key private. A key works on up to 2 devices, and you can free a device at niagaraindieapps.com/license/manage. A key can be disabled if the purchase is refunded or charged back, or if the key is being abused.
Terms of use: Other people's software
Reverse Engineer Apps is built on the open-source REA project (MIT licence) by morluto and contributors. The optional Ghidra analysis uses Ghidra (Apache License 2.0, from the U.S. National Security Agency) and Java (Eclipse Temurin, GPL version 2 with the Classpath Exception). Ghidra and Java are separate programs under their own licenses. They are not part of Reverse Engineer Apps and are installed only if you agree. Full notices are in the app under Open source credits.
Terms of use: Changes to these terms
If we change these terms we will update this page. Using the app after a change means you accept the new terms.
Terms of use: Contact
Write to admin@niagaraindieapps.com or use the Contact page at niagaraindieapps.com/contact and select Reverse Engineer Apps.
Trial and license: Free to download, free to try
Last updated: October 17, 2026.
Reverse Engineer Apps is free to download and install. Each device gets a free trial of 3 days (72 hours), counted from the first time the app is opened on that device. Everything in the app works during the trial.
Trial and license: After the trial
When the trial ends the app locks: the inspection tools stop working, and only the license, About and website-link screens stay available. It stays locked until a valid license key is activated. Changing your computer's clock backwards does not extend the trial, and clearing one of the stored copies of the trial data does not start a new trial.
Trial and license: The unlock
A one-time unlock costs $4.25 CAD and is bought on niagaraindieapps.com. It is permanent: there is no subscription and no renewal. After you pay, your license key is sent to the email address you gave at checkout.
Trial and license: Using your key
Open the app, enter the key in the License panel and press Activate. The app needs an internet connection to activate. After that it keeps working offline for as long as its last license check is still valid, and it renews that check when it starts while you are online.
Trial and license: Up to 2 devices
One license key can be active on up to 2 devices. A device is identified by a random ID the app creates for itself, not by anything about your hardware. To free a device so you can use the key elsewhere, go to niagaraindieapps.com/license/manage. The number of self-service device removals is limited; if you reach the limit, contact support.
Trial and license: When a license stops working
A license stops working if the purchase is refunded or charged back, or if the key is disabled for abuse. The app notices the next time it re-checks the license, which happens when it starts while you are online. A key that is not valid for this app, or that has reached 2 devices, is refused with a message saying so.
Trial and license: What activation sends
Activating or re-checking a license sends the license key, the app's ID, the random device ID, the platform (Windows, Linux or macOS) and the app version to our license server. See the Privacy Policy on this page for exactly what is stored.
Payments and refunds: Where you pay
Last updated: October 17, 2026.
The unlock is bought on niagaraindieapps.com. The app itself does not take payment. Card payments are processed by Stripe, and we never receive your full card number. The information you give at checkout, such as your email address, is covered by the site-wide Privacy Policy at niagaraindieapps.com/privacy.
Payments and refunds: The price
$4.25 CAD, one time, for a permanent license on up to 2 of your devices. The price you see at checkout is the price you are charged.
Payments and refunds: What you get
Your license key by email after payment is confirmed. The app is free to download and has a free 3-day trial, so you can try it before buying.
Payments and refunds: Refunds
The unlock is a digital product delivered at once, so all sales are final, except in the few narrow cases the Refund Policy sets out: a duplicate or incorrect charge, a payment that was confirmed but never delivered a working license, a purchase made without your authorization, and refunds that the law of where you live requires. To ask for one of these, contact us through the Contact page within 14 days of the purchase and include your order number, the app and edition, and the email used at checkout.
Read the full Refund Policy at niagaraindieapps.com/refunds before you buy.
Payments and refunds: If a refund is approved
It is paid back to your original payment method through Stripe, and the license for that order is deactivated from the refund date.
Support: How to reach us
Last updated: October 17, 2026.
Use the Contact page at niagaraindieapps.com/contact and select Reverse Engineer Apps, or write to admin@niagaraindieapps.com. In the app, the Support button opens the Contact page for you.
Support: For license questions
Include the Device ID shown in the app's License panel (quote it as is; it is a random ID, not a hardware ID) and the email address you used at checkout. Never send us your full license key in a public place.
Support: Managing your devices
To free one of your 2 devices, go to niagaraindieapps.com/license/manage.
Support: Ghidra and Java
The Ghidra analysis needs Ghidra 12.1.x and a 64-bit Java JDK 21 or newer. If the app says it cannot find them, use Install Ghidra and Java in the Ghidra analysis section, or Choose Ghidra folder if you already have Ghidra somewhere else. If the Windows setup was cancelled because you answered No to installing them, run it again and answer Yes.
Support: Not signed yet
This version of the app is not code-signed. Windows SmartScreen or macOS Gatekeeper may warn the first time you run it. If you downloaded it from niagaraindieapps.com you can choose to run it anyway.
