Introducing NiagaraOS™ A Different Way to Experience Your Computer COMING SOON — IN DEVELOPMENT One Screen. Multiple Worlds. What if your computer could be simpler to use, easier to navigate, and more productive — without requiring expensive new hardware or complicated software? Meet NiagaraOS, an ambitious new desktop operating system being developed by Niagara Indie Apps. Built on the foundation of Linux and open-source technology, NiagaraOS is being designed to bring together the familiarity of a traditional desktop with a fresh approach to multitasking, accessibility, privacy, and everyday computing. Our vision is straightforward: Your computer should work for you, not the other way around. One Monitor. Four Working Areas. Imagine having four working areas on a single monitor without constantly minimizing, maximizing, or searching through open windows. One of NiagaraOS's signature planned features is its innovative Multi-Zone Desktop. Your main workspace will be accompanied by three additional live display zones, allowing you to organize applications, monitor activities, and move between tasks with greater ease. Picture writing a document in OpenQuill while keeping your email, browser, and notes visible in their own dedicated spaces. Select a zone, bring it into focus, and continue working. Less window juggling. More getting things done. Meet the Niagara Command Centre We're designing a slide-out control panel that puts your most important tools within easy reach. From one convenient location, you'll be able to access: Voice Navigation: Control supported desktop functions using spoken commands, with the freedom to turn voice control on or off. Email Assistance: Check messages and optionally use AI to summarize emails or prepare replies for your approval. Notification Controls: Decide when and how your computer gets your attention. Display Zone Management: Organize your workspaces and choose which applications appear in each zone. Favourite Applications: Quickly access your most-used programs. Personal Widgets: Customize your Command Centre with useful tools and shortcuts. Our goal is to make everyday navigation more intuitive, with fewer unnecessary steps. AI When You Want It. Not When You Don't. NiagaraOS is being designed with a simple principle: Artificial intelligence should be a choice, not a requirement. Our planned Classic Mode will provide the essential desktop experience without requiring a large language model. For users who want additional capabilities, we're exploring optional local and cloud-assisted AI features, depending on hardware capabilities, privacy preferences, and available services. No forced AI subscriptions. No requirement to own an expensive AI-powered computer. Give Older Computers a Future We believe useful computers shouldn't become obsolete simply because they lack the latest AI hardware. NiagaraOS is being designed with efficiency, affordability, and responsible resource usage in mind. Our goal is to support a practical range of computer hardware, including older systems where technically feasible. Actual minimum hardware requirements will be determined through development and testing. Familiar Applications. More Possibilities. NiagaraOS is planned to support native Linux applications, web applications, and selected Windows programs through compatibility technologies. We're also planning integration with future Niagara Indie Apps projects, including OpenQuill, our independently developed open-source word processor. Not every Windows application will necessarily be compatible, but our aim is to make switching to NiagaraOS as practical as possible. Privacy, Security, and Control Your computer should remain under your control. NiagaraOS is being designed around privacy-conscious defaults, user-managed permissions, trusted software updates, backup and recovery capabilities, and optional AI services. We want users to have meaningful choices about their software, their data, and how their computers operate. A Project Built With Purpose NiagaraOS began with a simple question: Why should using a computer be more complicated than it needs to be? We're exploring a different approach — one that combines a familiar desktop, intelligent organization, accessible controls, and the freedom of open-source software. This is an independent development project from Niagara Indie Apps, built around curiosity, practical innovation, and the belief that good software should be accessible to everyone. The Future Is Taking Shape NiagaraOS is currently in its planning and development preparation stages. The features described here represent our intended design and are subject to technical feasibility, testing, and refinement. There is no confirmed public release date. NiagaraOS™ — One Screen. Multiple Worlds. Coming Soon from Niagara Indie Apps. Designed for simplicity. Built for freedom. Made for you.
